I was a tenant with York Realty for one year, and I would strongly advise against renting through this agency. Our tenancy was full of unprofessional conduct, dishonesty, and serious neglect of both tenant rights and property standards. At the start of the tenancy, the property was handed over in poor condition. Multiple areas were left unclean, mould was present on curtains, and there was a possum issue (urine leaking through the roof). We had to clean and remove mould ourselves. We lodged a report with the RTA shortly after moving in, and we kept full dated photo and video evidence from entry to exit. Throughout the tenancy, maintenance requests were ignored, delayed, or outright denied not by the owner, but the realestate. Serious issues included: • Mould in both bathrooms caused by leaks, failed seals, poor drainage, and glass cancer. Several trades inspected, but repairs were never approved. • A main bedroom light requiring an electrician went unfixed for over 7 months, only repaired the week before us vacating. • The balcony door leaked heavily during storms (soaking towels), grew mould, swelled, and often couldn’t be opened. • Widespread water damage to walls and ceilings (cracks, patchwork sinking, leaks under the house). • Faulty stove top that tripped the power if more than one burner was used. • Dishwasher racks were rusted, damaging cookware. • Air conditioner wiring melted after a lightning strike and was never repaired. • Laundry tap didn’t fit the sink properly. • Clothes line was unstable. • Garden and general property maintenance were neglected. • Light fittings and door handles across the property were loose, broken, or incomplete. When we raised these issues (repeatedly), York Realty: • Claimed they had contacted the owner or booked maintenance when they had not. (confirmed by new realestate and trades people) • Told us directly that the owner “never responded” to emails, though we later learned they never passed issues on. (confirmed by new realestate and trades people) • Told us to us directly the owner didn’t want to rent to us because of our age. • Described the owner to us as “shady and notoriously bad.” • Failed to notify the owner of our Notice to Leave. (confirmed by new realestate) • Displayed unprofessionalism in their office (including inappropriate décor: a red half human/half dog statue wearing a kink collar). It was only once the property changed management that we discovered the extent of how much had been withheld or mismanaged. To be clear: • We caused no damage to the property. • Every single issue we raised was pre-existing or a legal responsibility. • We have full dated photo/video evidence, correspondence, and even a recording of the property manager saying bad things about the owner and that the property only looked presentable because we maintained it ourselves. York Realty failed at the most basic responsibilities of property management, honesty, communication, and providing a safe home that meets minimum housing standards. Our experience was stressful, disappointing, and unacceptable. I would never recommend renting through York Realty. I also forgot to mention: we had multiple people come to the property, unannounced and without entry notices. They also never respond to emails and references Check past reviews and there’s a common trending issue with York.. .
